How can you force special characters to automatically appear in an input box?

So, I'm trying to make a form for a telephone number that uses the format of (000)000-0000 . I would like to make it easy for the user so they only have to type in the numbers and not the special characters.

So basically the user enters in 0001234567 in the form input box it would automatically appear as (000)123-4567.
